I just finished off a homemade caprese salad, from homegrown tomatoes and basil (and store bought mozzarella, as I don’t have any cows around for milking…). So far we’ve plucked five or six medium tomatoes from our little garden, and these have been better by far than any store bought PA tomatoes I’ve tried. In other words, they actually had flavor. At the suggestion of an officemate, I’m considering something new for next summer: joining a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). For a fee, members receive weekly or bi-weekly produce (and sometimes eggs, bread, meat, etc.) from local farms. You never know what will be in your produce bag each week– its always the ripest, freshest, in-season fruits and vegetables. Dru’s still not sold on the idea (I think he’s worried we’ll get a sack full of bok choy and then actually have to eat it), but I’ve been perusing Local Harvest to find nearby options. Most CSA seasons run from May to November, and most fill up before the season begins meaning you have to join in advance (I know, this is WAY in advance, but I like to think these things through). Check out the site for your own local area.
